Great White Shark Trip 2016... I am not sure why I have sat on these for so long… I guess I have been trying to think of something to do with them. Slowly going through intensely editing one at a time till I can almost feel the water around me again. In the end I just want as many people to see them, that’s really the bottom line. The obsession with these amazing animals all really started on some random blog post by a photographer that I just happened to stumble across close to 10 years ago. That became a life mission to capture sharks in a different way then I had seen before, specifically Great White Sharks. Eight years later with enough funds scrapped together for everything needed I finally set out to make those images with one of my best friends Sam. These 100 frames hardly does justice to the life experience him and I had on that boat for the three days we were on it… but im forever grateful, And STOKED to be going back this year J

I know its counter intuitive when you see my images that these muscle and teeth laden gray busses are actually quite friendly but I honestly never felt in danger at all. Yes I admit every cell in my body was tingling a bit as the cage door slammed open and I lowered myself into the water on the first dive… but once I was in there 10ft down with these guys all around me…. It was actually extremely peaceful… Obviously you have to respect an animal that has honed it skill as well as they have over the span of their existence. A couple times as the sharks would go for the bait lunging out of the water skin rolling over their eyes to protect them, they would land momentum propelling them at our cage eyes still half shut. They were really helpless to do anything other than plow into the side of our cage. Suddenly being literally face to face with a Great White shark is something everyone should experience once in their lives. Three or four times I used my Nikon to push them a direction to send them on their way. But as I said before I never felt in danger even while they made contact with me. You were so close you could look them in their dark black eye as they would spin around on the bait, them seeing you for that split second then compute you were not what they were just after and then snap back to the mission at hand.

Have a look thought and feel free to share. I really just want people to see these and hopefully spark some creativity or enthusiasm for a project as it did me. Thanks! J

San Jose Sharks Western Conference Finals 2016 So I was lucky enough to have been asked by the SJ Sharks to shoot all of their playoff games this year...Capturing everything from the players entering the facility to the game itself. Its been incredibly exciting and really challenging. Last night was the cheery on top as the boys won the West Coast Final putting them into the Stanley Cup! I took over 4,000 images in the 10 hours of yesterdays buildup... Here are some of my favorites....

San Jose Sharks 25th Anniversary Poster So not long ago the SJ Sharks came and asked if I would paint their 25th anniversary poster. It was a tricky job but I was stoked with the result. If you happen to be going to the game tonight you can take one of these bad boys home with you :)I made a little video about the process... Very grateful for the opportunity.

Marine 1... Aka Obamas Helicopter... SO last week my son and I were afforded an amazing opportunity to take a tour of Obamas Helicopter. I myself am a huge fan of anything that flies… but my 3 year old son is OBSESSED. He was so excited and loved every second. At one point with him sitting in Obamas chair the presidential seal behind him trying to buckle his seat belt…. I said “Gavin… I know you don’t know where you are right now… but you need to absorb where you are at this exact moment son”. What an experience. Thank you very much to all involved for letting him experience it.

Lens Organization Shelf... For a couple of years now I have been really frustrated with lens my lens organization. As my collection of toys has grown I have trouble remembering where everything is, what bag I last put what in or what camera had what on it. Usually lenses that were not use would just be stood up on a table in my office free to be knocked around by a passing 3 year old or better yet myself. As a photographer 5 min before you have to leave for a shoot is the last time you want to be stressed you can’t find something. I had looked online and really saw nothing that suited all the needs I was after. All the ones I could find either hid the lenses away in drawers with individual dividers or if they were out in the open only showed you the lens cap… having a couple lenses almost the same size this would have meant I would have had to grab each one till I found what I was looking for. I wanted to be able to walk into my office look at my wall and see exactly what was there and have it secure and safe at the same time.

Not finding what I was after I thought for a while till I decided on the quick sketch below. This shelf with wood back design would have rear lens caps secured to the underside of the shelfs with a nut and bolt holding the lens secure but also out in the open for me to see.

I went and bought a .5in thick finished 4’x8’ sheet of plywood from home depot and the correct shelf bracket, nut and bolts, lighting, and spray-paint needed. I cut the board down to the sizes I had worked out. Backboard was 27”wide X 40”tall and there would be 4 shelfs. Two deep ones on top 27” x 9” and then two smaller 27”x 7”. The two deeper ones would have the rear caps attached to the underside. I figured with 4 caps evenly spaced underneath that would give each leans that rested there a 6x6in square space they could hang in.

I started by sanding all the edges of the boards I had just cut.

Then I had made a couple templates and placed these over the top of the shelves so I could clamp them together and drill all the holes for my bolts at the same time. Ensuring the caps would all line up in the same place on each shelf.

Next I want about measuring out and leveling each shelf bracket. This took the longest time but was important to get right. I then attached each shelf to the brackets and then also put a line of wood glue on each shelf to the backboard for added strength.

After all this was completed I gave the entire thing a coat of flat black paint.

Next I installed the rear caps in the predrilled holes. Bolt-washer-cap-washer-nut.

I also then installed the LED strip lighting I had bought to back light the lenses when they were hanging on the shelf.

After installing the bolts I did not like how far out the threads came on the other side so decided to countersink them to make them flush with the shelf itself, the excess I then cutoff with my dermal . The last thing I wanted was a lens to fall off its mount and impale itself… Would kinda defeat the point.

Finally It was all done and I installed it in its final resting place. So far so good... and I am very pleased with the results. The only thing I want to get for it now would be some sort of black foam or spongy substance to protect anything I lay on the shelfs. The raw wood is not the softest and im afraid it might damage something.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, or If you want the templates I made I can also provide those if necessary

Court House Wedding... Simple, beautiful, and straight to the point.... I have been shooting weddings for quite a while now.... and the magic of the day during these big productions starts to ware off on you after a bit. Its not that they are bad in anyway just for someone like me who goes to so many a year it all kinda melts together in a blur that I have to capture leaving my head spinning and feet hurting... This wedding was a breath of fresh air. Being so small and intimate gave me the opportunity to really focus on the couple and on the really small things around us... In bigger productions my time is taken up running around trying to capture EVERYTHING the couple had setup that day... this wedding I was just a fly on the wall, a set of magic eyeballs recording as went along for them to enjoy for ever more. This wedding is the reason I started shooting weddings... Thanks guys for letting me come along.

Fleet Week San Francisco 2015 Another Fleet Week in SF has come and gone… for me my favorite weekend all year to shoot because of one thing… the Blue Angels. I had the amazing opportunity to shoot from the USCGC George Cobb Cutter on Friday and took full advantage (image below). This was all made possible by a couple of really amazing people. SO thank you to Donnell White of the US Coast Guard, Hoodlnes Mr Eric Eldon, Leesburg Todays Deputy Editor Danielle Nadler, and South Bay Accent editor Nora Teezle. Below the image of the Cobb you can see a slide show of what I got the past couple days... I would suggest viweing these full screen and preferably with some sort of sound track :)

The George CobbThis was the Ship I shot from on Friday. Thanks again to the US Coast Guard and Donnell White.
